Replies sorted oldest to newest

Download both SCARM and Anyrail (track planning programs) and test them out.  Both can be used freely up to a set number of pieces of track.  To maximize free usage, use as much of the longer pieces of track (either flex or solid will work).  Then, look around for existing plans on this forum and on other model railroad fora (there are quite a few).  Don't be afraid to look at both larger and smaller plans as well as plans in other scales; all will give you ideas to use in your own plan.

Once you have a rough idea of what you want, post both the plan file and a picture of your idea here, and members will provide suggestions for you.
