Hi all, I have a quick question. I have a 12 volt DC motor, 8 amps, for a 3 3/4 GPM water pump. Is there any way I can make it run both directions? IE: clockwise and counterclockwise.

ROBTX Thanks for the information, Looks simple enough! I will let you know how it turns out!
I suspect it's a universal motor with a field winding. You'd have to swap only the polarity of the armature and leave the field alone in that case.
Have you asked the manufacturer?
Hi Arthur, I have not, the motor was build in 1974, I don't even know if they are still around.
John, I switched wires and it still goes in the same direction. Someone told me maybe its just built to go in one direction. But I'm all ears!
Mike if it's a universal motor, you have to switch only one set of wires, I suspect they're internal. Think about the Lionel Pulmore motor, it's a universal motor. To reverse it's direction, you swap just the armature leads. If you run the Pulmore on DC, it behaves the same way.
Hi John, if I do that would I still be able to run it in both directions?
Like I said Mike, if it is a universal motor that's the way you'd reverse it.
You should be able to determine if it has permanent magnets in the stator, will it pick up magnetic objects? If so, ignore my comments about a universal motor.
John, I will have to take it apart to check. Wish me luck as this will be my first motor dismantal.
