I hate to as the question but, has there been any interest in rebuilding 1218 in the light if the tremendous enthusiasm of 611`s new life? It is certainly one of my favorite locomotives.

Yes, lots of "interest" by all the RR fans. Raising money for the overhaul completion and a building to keep maintained in is a whole different story.

There will always be interest to restore 1218 or 2156 or any other large steam locomotive. The question is who is going to pony up the cash? Norfolk Southern helped out significantly in the funding of the 611 restoration. I'm not sure the public will shell out the cash for 1218 without the promise of a tangible return right away.

I'm a bit concerned with the number of restorations that have happened recently and will be happening soon.
There is only so much money out there, and I fear that some groups may not get the money they need because there are so many groups with locomotives right now.
That reminds me - if you are chasing/photographing a locomotive, please buy a ticket and/or make a donation.

This is such a redundant question - already been asked on trainorders, trains, rypn interchange, fireup611, plus others. It's not illegal to be an informed rail enthusiast.
Apparently it's not enough to see if 611 can get through an excursion season without running over some millennial facebook star, or some inattentive old geezer.
My personal opinion is that NS's steam program will not last through the end of this decade.
The real question should be " How long will the NS continue the steam funding since Wick has left the building ? "
I would like to see the 1218 steam again, but is there enough participation even from the general public that would support that many fan trips ? The NS is doing a great job it seems filling up these trains, but I don't think with the mount of revenue traffic the NS is handling right now, that the rail time could be given for another excursion,at least not in the immediate future.
Hey Borden Tunnel, with the response that you gave to Schmann for his question concerning "1218". I'm figuring your in your 20's possible 30's with all of the answers to the worlds problems!
Have you served your country yet, and seen any "Action"? Bet not!
It's some of us "inattentive old geezers" that served our country, seen a Sh*t of Action, keeping our country free, so smart mouth A-holes, like you appear to be, can judge and question, and demand to take a vote on all of the issues.
If you did vote, it was probably for Obama. You know, the guy that wants to spread the wealth!...........................Brandy!
Wow, that was wholly uncalled for.
And FYI, someone's age or if they've been in the military really doesn't give you any more a right to have an opinion than anyone else. I served with plenty of people who meet the criteria in your post due to age and service who I wouldn't have trusted with ten cents (or to properly breathe and blink correctly).
Age also can make someone who's sort of a jerk into a world class one. It can also make them totally devoid of situational awareness (and before you ask, I'm neither in my 20s nor 30s, not that it matters).
One of the great things about serving is that you're supposed to realize that by doing so, everyone can have the same rights. Otherwise, you really missed the entire point and make other veterans look bad by association.
P51 we agree to disagree!
I did pull my post off, and it wasn't from what you said, or posted either.
I guess there is a little "Judge" in all of us!...............

To be honest with you, I tended to agree with Borden Tunnel. Even as a veteran myself, some people just might want to conduct a bit more research/investigation prior to posting some of the crap that is posted. My opinion, of course.

This matter has been resolved offsite, any others that are concerned can e-mail me.
Yeah, Hot Water, I went way over board, and should have sent "Borden Tunnel", a personal email, rather than venting, and Judging him. He has as much right for his views, and opinions, as anybody else does, that post on this forum.
He sent me one concerning my post, and I gave him an apology, for my personal digs, as that was uncalled for, and shouldn't even be on this great forum here!........
If you will read my original comment on the restoration of 1218 carefully, it was directed at the obvious excitement and energy that the nearly completed 611 has generated, and in that glow, I wondered if in fact things were said that 1218 would be next. I am fully aware of the additional cost and problems that would be encountered in such a project.
I in no way wanted to ruffle the feathers of any member of the forum, but I would suggest folks read the questions carefully before jumping in with both feet in a rather unfriendly way.

New NS steam program won't last forever? Well, then I better ride more trips before it comes to a sad end again. I can't travel very far with my mom's health, so trips are limited to the Mid Atlantic region, and Eastern PA and NJ area. Good thing 765 is coming to Allentown, PA this year. I rode behind it two years ago to Horseshoe Curve. I wanted to ride behind 611 in June but my mom said Virginia was too far for her right now.
