12834 crane magnet modification

I have a 12834 crane that I modified the control panel to be able to stay in the on position without holding the button, now I would like to modify the magnet, since all you can pick up is a small screw or paper clip. I have purchased a magnet from East Coast train parts that came from Madison hardware an original. It appears a full wave bridge rectifier is in the cab going to the magnet, QUESTION if I bypass the rectifier and wire the magnet to the feed will this work?
