Does anyone have info regarding a two solenoid arrangement for the E-Unit in the 1938-39 American Flyer 3 rail steam engine. We are trying to figure out why there were two solenoids and what each of them did. Reach me at: milt@paiger.org

what number is it?
and where is the second e unit
One is the reverse unit coil, the other is probably for the RCS coil, with picks up on DC only to control the reverse unit.

We have a winner...
Chuck that should be the 1941 model
They made the engine 2 ways in 1941. One with regular F-N-R reverse, and a remote reverse that would on cycle through the F-N-R sequence only when a shot of 1.5 volts to the track with the supplied controller, or a Lionel transformer with a whistle button.
RDC was available the first year Gilbert offered 3/16ths O gauge trains (1939).
It was called remote directional control. Gilbert introduced it in 1939. It was included in selected models in 1939, 40 and 41. It is described in the Gilbert catalogs. They are on line at myflyertrains.net.
