Lionel2025

Just wanted to get some opinions on this 2025. I'm so impressed with the quality and durability of this little engine and was wonder why they are never mention when discussing PW Locomotives. Mine will run alone at 7 volts and will pull a 5 car heavy load at 8. Its pulled 12 heavy PW cars and never requires more than 12 volts. Its so smooth that its comparable to my 226E. I hitched it to the 2671 because this little engine has earned the promotion. Also, I do have a 1952 version which is nice but nothing like the early version in terms of looks and performance.

Yes the Lionel 2025 it is a great engine and runs great on O27 too.  It and the 2035, which is the same with Magna-traction and both are great and two are my layout all the time.

I started with four Lionel 249s  and moved up to four 2026s for better pulling and then 2035 /2025 for even better pulling.

One 2035 sets on a siding with a milk car, cattle car, barrel unloading car, refrigerator icing car, all heavy operating cars plus a gondola for use with the gantry crane and it will pull them all with ease.

I had a '47 model 675 that looked just like yours- aluminum stack and (I presume) unpainted steam chest that was a little lighter than the rest of the body.  White numbers on the boiler front and no added detail on the pilot deck.  It ran very smoothly, and when you cut the power it would coast a country mile!

One thing that bugged me a little about this loco... The motor was so efficient (?) that the loco would start to move, sometimes several inches, before the e-unit plunger would "pick up" and shift into neutral.  So it was difficult to switch with and didn't get as much track time for that reason.

I never really figured out the details.  But 1950s Lionel's motors seemed to have more internal friction (i.e., less coasting, more voltage to run) and/or the e-units became more efficient.  Because our 2056 Hudson (built 1952) didn't suffer from this issue.  Neither had MagneTraction, but either one of them could wrap the layout with 20 freight cars and pull the train without slipping!
