Watched a 1982 movie, “Soup for One,” the other day. A character, played by Marcia Strassman (you might remember her from a recurring role as a nurse on “M*A*S*H”, or from "Welcome Back, Kotter"), picks up the real estate section of the NY Times. The headline is, Rail Yards Inspire Plans for Housing and Industry. Turns out it was the Feb. 22, 1981, edition. About former rail yards in the inner harbor. Here's a link to the whole thing:
Sites include land in Jersey City owned by trustees of the Erie Lackawanna, former NYC yard along the Hudson River between about 60th and 72nd streets, and the Harlem River yard in the South Bronx.
How much of this has come to pass? I see that at least some of what is now Harborside in Jersey City has been built. And the proposal for Lincoln West fizzled out, and that Riverside South is in the area.
