I am looking for information about this choo-choo.

The story goes... My paternal great grandfather was a locomotive/train engineer. Pictured is one of the engines he piloted in Western NY - 2-8-0 Locomotive #607. My dad says it was a Lackawanna #607. My great-grandpa (I never met, passed before my birth) is standing top-most, near the cab. That's all I have for now. My aunts are supposed to check their old photos to see if they find anything else written on the back that would give us more info/clues or pin down the year this might have been taken, but we asked them around christmas and have not heard back yet...
Anyway, does anyone here know about this locomotive? - it's history? I'd love to be able to tell my dad more about it.

So -this means that the 607 was not a Lackawanna? My dad wasn't 100% sure about it.

Pardon my ineptitude, I trying to locate the info you found. is there a write up about it or related info?

Look at this site  https://scotlawrence.github.io/LValltimeroster/     Scroll down to number 1059    Looks like it was built by Baldwin for the Delaware Susquehanna and Schuylkill RR and wore number 3 for them    LV bought them and scrapped it in 1918

Your photo of #607 and crew is terrific. I also read your profile about your grandfather and his trains. I think you'll enjoy getting them running again. Good luck.

Right on.

the #607 engineer is my paternal great grandfather and the Lionel collection comes from my maternal grandfather. But, it is kinda cool feeling the train vibes all around 👍
