Hi here is a picture of the wiring diagram pretty much same on all Lionel prewar engines. all is done is field coil wires are reversed to change motor direction!!!! you can usually buy e units on ebay or other web sights

Is the eunit a pendulum type?
253E engines never had a 2 position pendulum 'flip-flop' type unit. Lack of space. 253E types went from manual reverse to 3 position typical reverse units. 254E's did have 2 position flip=flop reverse units.
Chuck, ya better read Greenberg Vol 1 O gauge 1915-1928 page 259. Plus I've worked on them. Rob English would be very upset if Lionel never made them 😁
I'm going to walk back my previous post, turns out John was right. A few 253E's were made with 2 position Flip-Flop units. Turns out I had one in my collection and forgot it was 2 position. It is the late Stephen Girard two tone green 'Lake Shore Limited'. An assortment of colors, all original paint.

Found a wiring diagram when I googled it and it took me to this web sight with a 2 position diagram. Cleaned and lubed my complete motor and reverse unit, then rewired it correctly and worked as good as they work. Poor reverse unit in my opinion. If you run a lot of cars and get a short interruption and it jumps directly in reverse. Not good. I guess that's the reason the have a lock out switch. Same with my 260 loco. Thank you all Roy

This is spot on, you can tweak some sensitivity out of this unit, or lock it out. Its a pretty good unit for something thats 90.
253s have the 2nd most color variations. The 250/252 has the most I think.
