I don’t see anything in this more impressive than the hoosic tunnel which was built at about the same time.  Give our engineers some credit.

Yea, but this is a BBC story, and the 148 year old Hoosac is already a national engineering landmark.  If you watched the video you see and here diesels in action, but no mention of how the get up and down the mountain, on their own or with help.

That was the major omission, I thought. It was disappointing that they mentioned the use of fixed steam power installations to help move the trains up grades, and showed a steam engine, but there was no discussion about how it was done. It seemed this was one of the central points of the "engineering marvel," and yet it wasn't discussed.
