The first commercially successful steam locomotive Salamanca was built in 1812. The oldest steam loco still in existence is Puffing Billy built in 1813. The US imported their locomotives from England. The first U.S. built loco was the Tom Thumb in 1830.
England was a fertile land for early steam.
