Any pictures?

Andy: I have a picture of the 2011 car which I can post. I have successfully posted a few photos to this site before but not recently and I need the instructions for posting photos. I noticed that the instructions are not at the top of the page anymore. If someone would repost those instructions, I’ll post a photo of my car.

They have been offering commemorative cars for quite a few years (they have missed a year or two here and there). Check out this Wikipedia entry for some photos of the cars made up to 2009 (there was no 2010 car). The 2012 is going to be a new run of the submarine car, and it is supposed to be coming soon.

I gotta ask........and although it might be obvious to some, please answer....my daughter & son-in-law moved recently to Spittsburgh Pa so he can attend/get a masters at Carnegie Mellon.
So is this thread saying that there is a great train layout/village in downtown Spittsburgh? She lives on Bayard St. Is this Carnegie center close by?
Please advise 'cause even in this winter, her mama & I are going to go see them.

The answer is yes. It is downtown, on the North Shore right next to Heinz Field - you can't miss it, as there is a rather large WWII submarine parked in the river next to the center (the USS Requin - and is part of the CSC's exhibits, and is open only on weekends in the Winter). This link will give you hours and directions. Bayard St. is probably a 10-15 minute drive from downtown (traffic conditions can significantly alter this estimate).

If you are coming relatively soon, the CSC is currently playing "Rocky Mountain Express" in the OmniMax theater. Nothing better than catching a film showing a steam train in the Canadian Rockies and then visiting a world class O gauge layout. Smile

Be advised, the admission is around $18 a person for the CSC, but that includes all exhibits and the submarine if it is open (OmniMax shows and some other shows like the laser shows are extra). Parking is usually around $5, I think.

Also, if you like to gamble, there is a casino just next door...

If that happens, my vote is for The Penn Brewery. It is just a short drive up-river from the CSC. Big Grin

If you end up doing the incline, there are tons of good restaurants below at Station Square, including the Grand Concourse in the old Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad terminal building (be advised that it is a little on the expensive side, but well worth it, once in a while). And a lot of the places around Station Square offer the opportunity for a little train watching while you are there.

There is a lot to do. Next Saturday there will be the annual Long Rifle exhibit at the Bushy Run Battlefield. Located about 20 miles east off of Rt. 22 this little museum commemorates the British victory over the Indians led by Chief Pontiac. Expect a good crowd in the morning for the exhibit of genuine and repo flintlocks,Indian stuff, powder horns, art works and other memorabilia from those times.
In that battle the famous BlackWatch and Colonials defeated a larger force of Indians and then moved on to Ft. Pitt to relieve that outpost during Pontiac's Rebellion.
Incidentally, the Fort Pitt Blockhouse Museum is also open.
I'm not sure if the French and Indian War Exhibit is still at the Heinz Museum or not.
Good things for the history buff to see along with trains in our area.

The Pittsburgh zoo is a great place to visit in winter.
The train and merry Go Round are closed but everything else is open and the best part is there is no one there! My family has a membership and go three or more times a month.

The member ship is the way to go for a family. if you attend twice you have paid the same price.

I agree with andy The Grand Concourse and incline are to do.
The science center is costly but worth a visit. Phipps conservatory is beautiful. and the museums are great too!

what is the scale of the car? was it traditional 0 scale or just 0 scale? i cant find anything on the box or the car itself. this car is the first of what i would like to become a large collection, but i cant buy anything else until i find out the scale of this one. i went to the carnegie science center on a field trip, had enough cash, and i just couldn't resist it. Someone please help a guy out.

GG1GUYY

I received mine last fall.

They used to advertise their cars for sale on the gift shop section of their website.  But I just went to their website which apparently has been completely redesigned since last time I went to it and now I don’t see any listing of items for sale in the gift shop.  I would suggest calling them.

Also Patti Rogers from the Science Center used to post on here.  Perhaps she can help if she’s reading this.

I took my kids to the CSC this past weekend.   They only had the 2011 boxcar available in the gift shop - it was $45 if I remember correctly.

They did have a N&W J running on the large loop hauling a set of huge PRR coaches.  It was great to see something other than the normal Lionel "starter set" engines or Thomas running around the layout.
