Over on another thread, I just responded to a post about the possibility of more FM Train Masters in Lionel's upcoming 2016 catalog.  And it dawned on me that I saw my first Lionel FM in 1966, the year my Dad gave me my very first Lionel train set.  50 years ago!!!

My first train set was a starter O-27 set, but I vividly recall paging through the catalog that year and admired some of the  O-Gauge sets, one of which was a freight set headed up by a blue/yellow Virginian FM.  I think the entire set was $135, and it included an operating poultry car and had a pair of remote O-Gauge switches.  The FM was also catalog'd with an ala carte price of $65.  I still have the original catalog tucked away somewhere with the $65 price crossed out and marked down to $52 by the LHS store employee.  Even that was a lot of money back then.

I know some of you folks have been in this hobby longer than 50 years, but I just realized 2016 will be 50 years for me.  A lot has certainly changed in this hobby during those years, but my excitement for this hobby remains as alive as it was in 1966 as seen through a child's eyes.

Anybody else "celebrating" their Golden Anniversary in model railroading this year???

David,

I hadn't thought of Golden anniversary in the hobby, but I will be coming close.  I'm not sure how to count it.  No one gave me a train set even though I wanted one for a few years before I saved enough money to buy my own when I was 13.  That would have been 1969.  I couldn't afford an O gauge set, so I bought a Tyco HO F7 set.  It is long gone.  They didn't make them like the Lionel sets.

Happy Golden Anniversary David!

Wow. Some of you guys are amazing in regards to exact time/date for major childhood/youth milestones!

As for me: I can't remember when I received my first train set. I think it was a clockwork train in the mid-1950s?  There was also a battery powered train set or two. Then there was the Marx/Allstate HO set in 1957 or 1958?

My most memorable set of my youth was the last train set I received: A Lindberg Lines set I received for Christmas, 1962.  I was ten at the time. That set truly started me off in HO scale, and by the mid/late 1960s, I was a "serious" HO modeler. By "serious", I mean painting and decaling engines and rolling stock for prototype roads that weren't commonly available, as well as assembling "craftsman" (stick) type kits.

Ah, the wonder years!

I still have three of the cars from my original Lindberg Lines set, having run on several of my HO layouts over my lifetime to date. They were equipped with Kadees decades ago and have served me well all that time. They will serve me again on my upcoming retirement layout.

oh my,,never thought of that,,,,i was born in 1948 ,my father had a 2025 +green passenger cars,,(I still have it) but I remember in 54 I got the erie freight set, a Christmas present from my grandmother,,,so,,,,i can say on on hand it my 67th ,but then possibly I could be my 60th ish,,,,,either way I'm old,,,hahahaha thanks for the fun post
