I have 2 steam engines that have been sitting for years and I decided to get them going. The 2-6-2, 2029 engine I could not get to run so I did some maintenance on it and removed the e unit. Now runs fine, I know it will only go straight.

The other is a 2-4-2, 2034 engine that I removed the e unit from and I have to spin the wheels to get it going. It wont start on its own or have speed control. I had already pulled the armature and cleaned the copper. Brushes were fine. Double checked wiring from removing e unit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

your not giving enough information for anyone to help you !!who makes the engines what are there item numbers ! are they Lionel or MTH  k line? lioncels  could be 6 - 123456 or something like that or 30-1234 for mth how old are they!

if you give us some information mYBE some here wil be able to help you! postwar pre war?????

@Alan Mancus, note that @Gronberg did provide the correct postwar Lionel catalog numbers of 2029 and 2034. I would expect that a competent service station technician would have picked up on that

@Gronberg, Olsen's has the service documents available (grab them while you can - their website is known to go off line for days at a time)

There is also general locomotive service information here (starting on printed pg 51, pdf pg 53):

Thanks for the info, I have a copy of the 2029 and 2034 htm documents. However the https://ogrforum.com/...sories%20%201954.pdf,  wont open?

The 2034 that needs to be pushed to start likely has a bad armature. If one of the three segments is open, the loco will not start on its own.

If you take off the brush holder plate, you can take a ohmmeter to the three commutator segments. Each one should have the same low resistance to each other one, and all of them should have infinite resistance to the main shaft and the laminations.
