Where did Pennsy have water pans, was it all through out their system, or just specific places in New York/Pennsylvania. I never saw any located in Ky or Indiana between Indianapolis and Louisville. Just a question I had after seeing some of their old Coal Tenders with them on the bottom. I thought that New York Central had that, as an exclusive on the railroad......Brandy!

I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but both RR's only used pans on the 'main line' between NYC and Chicago mostly for the Great Steel Fleet and PRR's blue ribbon passenger trains.
Bob, I read all of this info twice, and to say it is extremely interesting what say the least. I thought that this was a "Super Article", and I have passed it on for all of my Railroad Club Members to view. Even know we live in the heart of the old C&O / N&W territories here in Ashland,Ky/Huntington,Wva the members will love this article, as we always talk steam locomotives, and what they did for this country of ours.
Can you imagine trying to hire a group of our young people of today, to work maintenance on track pan operations. Ha,Ha,Ha! I'd sell tickets to see that one unfold. Many thanks again...................................Brandy
Bob,
Thank you for this 'Watering Pan' info.
It, is interesting info., which is useful in modeling and just to have as past railroad history.
Take Care,
Ralph
Great article. I grew up close to the Hawstone track pans but am to young to have seen them in operation.
there were track pans located just west of Rahway, NJ on the PRR main line. I do not know when they were removed.
Thanks for the article Bob, I enjoyed reading that.
