One safe way to strip paint would be Easy-off spray oven cleaner. It doesn’t harm plastic, but use kitchen gloves when cleaning the oven cleaner off. Use a used old toothbrush to get into the detail. Rinse it off with warm soapy water, let it dry completely. When you are ready to paint, I usually give the parts a quick wipe down with 91% isopropyl alcohol, (found at drug stores). Use a primer (gray preferred), and then the chosen silver.
