I have 6 lionel #260 bumpers on my layout and the bulbs get very hot ,has any one tried to put different bulbs in these. Some get so hot they melt the red tops on them.

You didn't say what voltage the bulbs are, but if you are running command and have the throttle turned up all the time, you need 24 volt bulbs and they should run cooler.
I use 18 volt ones and I don't melt anything. I run 17.5 volts for command control and it acts as another "magic bulb" for DCS.

Anyone try putting an LED in these that could be a solution where nothing even gets warm
I have some short LED bulbs that I tried in one of them, worked fine. Using 24 volt bulbs for command operation works well too.
ok switched it to 24 volts now does any one know where i can get replacement bulb cover and lionel # for it.
Those are generic lamp covers used all of the place on Lionel stuff. Almost any parts dealer will have them. It's the same size as on the KW and ZW transformers, as well as things like the #456 coal ramp.
ebay = toys and hobbies = model rr = o-gauge = MANY suppliers.
