Does anyone have a good source for 2mm diameter LEDs in a through hole, round base, dome top format?  There seem to be limitless supplies of 3mm LEDs in this format for pennies each.  I've only found a few 2mm LEDs and these have been over $1 each.

Alternatively, what are good LEDs for marker lights?

Thanks!

The only ones that are a true 2mm all the way back are the Lumex ceramic LED's that most of the manufacturers use for markers.

Here's the red ones for 50 cents each: http://www.surplusgizmos.com/L...LX203CIT_p_2764.html

Digikey has a bunch of them, as you say, they're not cheap: Lumex 2mm Ceramic LED's, Red, Yellow, Green at Digikey.

I found someone selling a bunch of the red ones sometime back for 10 cents each, I bought all they had.

I don't think the flat-top (albeit low-cost) LEDs meet the OP's criteria for round-base and dome-top?

To be sure, it is possible to sand/smooth/polish flat-top LEDs into a dome-top but this can challenge one's patience!

That said, if you accept this level of detail modeling as part of the fun/hobby, another option is to use flexible acrylic fiber cable as the lens.  You would still need to shape the cable end into a dome and additionally drop some colored transparent paint with the chosen lens color (unless you have white marker lights ).  So called "end-glow" acrylic fiber comes in 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, etc. diameter and can be purchased by-the-foot.  One "trick" is you can drive multiple fibers with a single LED which might apply to illuminating 2 marker lenses.

No doubt the ceramic stem LED is the closest-exit.

Mouser appears to have the red ones as well.  SSL-LX203CIT  Their illustrations are incorrect, but the spec sheet linked is correct for the ceramic LED.  Stock: 1,590 Can Ship Immediately

FWIW, Digikey also has red ones in stock: SSL-LX203CIT1,254 Can ship immediately

I just stocked up on all the varieties.

On this topic, where can I buy the 2mm LEDs like what MTH uses for markers but in bulk, multiple colors? The dome tops are fine, but the white side walls should have more of light around the sides. Like the lumex's but for deeper channels

What specific LED's are you talking about?  For markers and class lights on steam, MTH and Lionel have been using the Lumex ceramic LED.  If you're talking about post LED's, you can get them almost everywhere.  Be specific as to what you're asking for.

I know the ones you're talking about now, they're used in the older stuff.  Williams and Weaver used them in markers and class lights on the brass steam.  I have never found those, and I've scoured the earth, they seem to have disappeared totally from the market.

I found this image on Google, wish I could link that small one to a product.

Maybe it is the Lumex Ceramic I am thinking of, but it seems like what MTH supplies are a bit different, the LEDs are foggy (difused) , not clear. The LEDs they use looks simmilar but the light emitting part is taller than just the dome tops.
