Here are the instructions from the MTH website to wire your Crossing Gate using tubular track.

If this doesn't answer you question satisfactorily, please reply with the type of track you're using, that would help someone answer your question.  There are other solutions for triggering the gate, but if using tubular track, the method in these instructions are fairly straighforward.

I use FastTrack. There is also MTH 30-11012. Is there something I can buy to activate either crossing gate automatically as the train passes the crossing?

Steve M,

Since you're already using FasTrack with the MTH 30-1073 the two best options are

1) Lionel FasTrack Accessory Activator Pack SKU: 612029  or

2) MTH 45-1028 Infrared Track Activation Device - ITAD

Connections for the other MTH 30-11012 Crossing Gate are different from the 30-1073 and will work best with the ITAD.

Here is a link to the 30-11012 Crossing Gate directions:

Thanks for that information. I'm reading a lot of negative stuff about the crossing gates not working well long term on the MTH 30-1078, 30-11012 and the Lionel 6-12062. If I want something reliable long term am I better off to settle for the Lionel 6-12052 which has lights but not gates?

I can tell you how to hook them up.  I can't speak to their long term reliability.

If that is now your question and you want more people to respond, I'd suggest you Start a new Topic with a Title something like "Need Opinions on Long Term Reliability of Different Crossing Signal/Gate Options to use with FasTrack"
