Does the Silver Bullet locomotive need to be on the track for this car to operate?

The cars are slaved to the locomotive that has special electronics to manage the cars. You also need a pretty strong DCS signal for the set to operate properly. I have the set with an extra car and the tail car, and you need a "booming" DCS signal for the cars to operate properly. However, it is impressive when it does.
