Hello,

I just finished repairing and servicing my Dad's 3462 milk car. It was well played with. I have replaced the wiring and cleaned the mechanism.  The car works just fine when touching the shoe rivet contact with power, but fails to operate on the fastrack operating section. What happens is the couplers buzz and open. This car has the early staple end trucks. Is something grounding out?

You should have to touch a power lead to each shoe rivet contact. The mechanism should not be "grounded" to the frame.
Does the fastrak section have an "unload" function where one accessory blade is hot (power) and one is ground? That is what is required for most Lionel operating cars. Only one couple should open when the unload button is pressed.

Yup, to each shoe contact and it works. I know the operating track section works as I have other operating cars that work  on it OK. This all leads to the car. When the car is off the track, it's not grounded and it works. That means power from the operating rails is going through the axles and grounding on the outside rails instead. Humm.
