We have a 3656 stockyard and car that needs some help. The pads have been changed out and the cattle move reasonably well through the stockyard and the car at about 12 volts. The problem I’m having is the stockyard ramps that drop toward the car don’t usually drop. At first I thought the platform was getting in the way, but even without the platform the ramps don’t drop.

Should the platform “float” and be removable, or should it be fixed to the pads?

Are there any tricks to getting the ramps to drop properly?

After some tinkering with the stockyard, the problem seems to be two fold.

Firstly, the lever that helps pull the ramp assembly back down was too close to the trackside fence. I bent it slightly away from the tracks, which helped turn the ramps slightly toward the track and gravity takes over and the ramps fall when power is applied.

Secondly, the replacement pads that were installed under the platform are too thin. This makes the platform sit too low and put downward pressure on the ramp tabs, not allowing the ramp assembly to swing down.
