Do they have dealers?

Yes.

If so are there any that have good pre-order discounts?

Generally no, as there is not that much "mark-up" on Sunset/3rd Rail/Golden Gate Depot products anyway. I find it best to reserve/order direct, then you know EXACTLY who you are dealing with.

I'm asking for a friend, it is about the SD40-2 specifically. Thank you for any info.

Hot Water knows his stuff, you will not find any discounts on Sunset, 3rd Rail, GGD. Buying direct from Scott is the only way to go. You will get factory direct trains, the ability to make payments on your orders over time even before they hit production, you'll get some of the best communication I've seen from any manufacturer and you'll receive unparalleled customer service. All of these things have far more value than any discount

There are hobby shops that deal with sunset 3rd rail.   You might check with your favorite dealer and ask if he/she does.    I know Dixie Union Station in Mason Ohio has been a dealer.   I have purchased through him many times.

But as Hotwater says, the markup is pretty small, so you may not get a discount.
