I have a 3rd Rail 4024 Big boy- has TMCC- runs great- I bought knowing the sound doesn't work. Any recs on how to fix the sound? Is it worth trying to add cruise control?

No idea what is wrong with yours but things that prevent sound are the two audio boards, the volume pot, the speaker plus all the interconnected wiring. Also make sure the audio boards are installed in the correct location. Unlikely the radio board is bad if the engine moves.
As for Cruise you would pretty much have to bin those boards and replace with ERR Cruise Commander and Railsounds these days.

Pete has it covered I think. If you have an issue with either of the Railsounds boards, I have replacements in stock for either of those. I can also test them for you if you need to be sure what their status is.
Thanks- i tested the pot switch and it works ok- the speakers (8 ohm 0.25watt) is reading 4Kohm so I think that might be the problem- worth a shot. I have found an exact replacement:

Would you use an exact replacement- or is it worth trying something like this which was recommended previously as a 'better' speaker?
A few of us have been using that exact Visaton driver with good results assuming it fits. Its about the same size as a 50 mm Fatboy. Sounds (pun??) like you found the problem.
