I hope all you folks are enjoying the early summer. It is just warming up over here and our factories are busy making the models you have been waiting so long for.

Our main factory has finished the Jawn Henry, this will arrive in late June.

Next on their plate is the NYC T-3a Electric, a fine locomotive with great sound, great pulling power and model that has never seen the rails in O Scale. Thanks to all our NYC friends out there for their assistance to make this model accurate and spectacular. See the T-3a in action at: http://www.3rdrail.com/reservation.html#NYCT3.

Along with the NYC T-3, our factory is producing the Light Weight Coaches (first batch). We will be sending out notices on these shortly. Only 300 coaches were produced in this batch, so only 5 different roads are arriving at this time (C&O, NP, NYC, SP and UP). The remaining roads and any standby orders will be produced in the fall. In addition to the coaches is the very limited production of the SP Lark. What is special about the lark production is the all brass Baggage and RPO cars. These super detailed cars were necessary because of the sloping roofline. We wanted this train to be done RIGHT, and so we did them in brass. Pictures will be posted shortly at: http://www.goldengatedepot.com/reservation.html  Look for these three projects to arrive simultaneously in August. Layaway payments are available to any direct customer requesting.

The FP7A and F7B Diesels will be next in line for production. Reservations will close end of June. We are doing road specific details such as, single or dual headlight, with or without dynamic brake, freight or passenger pilots, antennas and lift rings on PRR, small, large or no covers for the rear fan. Vertical or horizontal vents and nickel plated vent strip. Again, these models are powered by a single Canon Precision motor with all axle powered. The newest OEM sound system will be installed in these models along with our temperature regulated smoke units.  You can see these on our web site at: http://www.3rdrail.com/reservation.html#FP7 Don't forget to order the B Dummy Unit with your model.

We are working on an end of the year production of the B&O Columbian Set B, and Aluminum Finish Set (Combine, Diner, Sleeper and Observation Car). And early 2014 we will produce the PRR 1938 Broadway limited in Fleet of Modernism and Tuscan Paint Scheme.

The PRR BM70M, HORSE EXPRESS and THEATER SCENERY CARS Design is almost complete. These should be produced late in 2013 in very limited quantities.

At our other factory we awaiting parts to complete "The Canadian" train. This production should be finished in August or September. The plastic factory is finally running again, and our Modernized Heavy Weight Coaches will be produced in this same time period. We have all been waiting too long for this one.

The N&W Mollies are in production now and should be finished in September or October. We are sorry the schedule keeps slipping, but it is just how this factory deals with production. They are slow, but thorough.

Our last factory in Korea is hard at work painting and finishing the GN 08. Look for these models in the August / September time frame. Enjoy the pictures and brochure at on our web site at: http://www.3rdrail.com/reservation.html#GN08

After the GN08 a very short run of brass Tourist Stock cars for our Flying Scotsman and A4 Mallard Customers will be produced in the fall. These were to be a large production in aluminum but are now a small production in brass, with super detailing. It is what the customers wanted. We will be notifying those who reserved these shortly.

There is Pennsy engine out there somewhere. Oh yes, the PRR L-1 Mikados. They should be finished this fall. After this production is finished the Erie S3/S4 will be done. Again, see our web site for details on these.

Lastly, the SP AC9 should be produced by November 2013. Look for more details on our web site as we get closer to production.

Regarding some of our other offerings: We may have to disappoint those of you that stuck your necks out and reserved models. Seems there is a lack of interest in several of our offerings that we may have to pull from the list. Included in this list are the:

Sierra #38 and B&O P-7. We don't understand where the customers went for the B&O P-7, but we may have to side step this one. Better to reserve these if you were wanting them, otherwise we can't go into production without enough reservations.

I know this is a mouthful of information, but we aim to make the models you want, at a price that is reasonable with fantastic detail and quality too.

Please support our efforts by reserving the models you wish to buy. Then we can move forward confidently with these projects.

Best Regards,

Scott Mann - China

Concerning powered "B" units, I think both the WP and the D&RGW tended to operate A-B-B consists of the "F" units also. The Santa Fe also preferred A-B-B-B unit consists.

Well, I didn't intend to start a new topic in the midst of Scott Mann's timely report; thank you Rusty and Greg for the info. WP usually ran an FP7-A with two B units (F3 or F7) on the Cal Z. They did occasionally run an A-B-A consist. I have an old California Zephyr promotional video that shows both arrangements, but it is predominantly A-B-B. (Also, I don't really want to buy two powered FP7 A units, too much $$$...).

Scott, I'm new to ordering these cars and just placed a "pre-order" for the NP and GN cars with The Public Delivery Track.

So from your update, it appears the NP cars may be produced yet this year (Summer 2013), while the GN "Empire Builder" cars will follow at a later date, perhaps even in 2014?  Secondly, it appears these cars are being offered as individual coaches (4 road numbers per road-name) as well as a 4-car "finish" set (which includes a combine, vista dome, diner and observation).  So does that mean a full complete set would consist of 8 cars per roadname?  And if so, are all cars for a given roadname being produced in the same production run?  Thanks for the clarification.

David

UPDATED QUESTION... Scott, still a bit confused.  Am I correct in that the matching 4-4-2 sleepers have already been produced in both the NP and GN liveries?  In other words, the sleepers were produced in an earlier production run, and now the matching individual coaches and "finish" set are being produced in later runs?  How many sleeper road-numbers per livery?  Sorry to ask such basic questions, but ordering cars like this is completely new to me.  Much more familiar with ordering complete sets at a time.  Thx...

As for the pulling power of the F units. My FL9s each pull 3 head end cars plus 8 light weight passenger cars without too much effort. These locomotives each have one large motor that sits midway in the locomotive with two drive shafts power all of the axles. I am operating them on Lionel Fast Track with 048 curves and they run nicely with the cars behind or in front of them (push/pull).

Scott

Was wondering if a road name was NOT in the first run of light weight coaches, how will that impact the finish set?

Since I don't know the order in which the Finish set and the second run of light weight coaches will be made.

If you order the light weight coaches and the finish set and the light weight coaches were not in the first run and the finish sets are run before the second run of light weight coaches will that mean that YOU WILL RUN THE LIGHT WEIGHT COACHES IN THE SECOND RUN? Thanks Scott, Bill

They have already made 10-6 and 4-4-2 sleepers. 4 numbers each (At least I think so, there's Cars 1-4 listed on the box label). Then 4 numbers for the coach, and the finish set.

Regarding the Coach Runs:C&O, NP, NYC, SP, UP are being run this month. The rest will be run along with the Finish Set and Columbian B Set later this year. If there are stand by orders for the first run of coaches, we will make them up at that time. So if you ordered NP and GN, you will get the NP first, and GN later.

Noting the lack of reservations for Sierra #38 and B&O P7, perhaps Scott might consider a Burlington O1a 2-8-2. There has been some interest expressed on this forum for this locomotive and Burlington power, in general. #4960 was used 8 years (1958-1966) in fan trip service plus pulled the Circus Train from Baraboo, WI to Milwaukee in 1966. It was a fan favorite. The O1a's took a variety of forms, with Elesco and Worthington FWH's, extended L&B smokeboxes vs. conventional, oil burners + coal burners, and tender side sheets conventionally vertical + canted inward, for switching. This would force fellows like me to purchase more then one!

They were colorful, with the "Q" red and gold herald, oxide red cab roofs and glossy, well-maintained black paint. Prior Sunset 3rd Rail Burlington steam locomotive projects were for locomotives previously done by Precision Scale, so some of the market was pre-saturated. The O1a has never been done in O Scale. It's a good roustabout locomotive that was amoung the last steam locomotives in regular service in the USA, so they lasted deep into the first generation diesel era.

The CB&Q O-1a is a great suggestion. I will try it soon.

After negotiations this trip, our builder agreed to be very flexible with our quantities, offering to do production in steps instead of all at once. So here it goes:

B&O P7 - ITS A GO

SIERRA - ITS A GO

We have some new announcements to make. We will do this through our online newsletter. Sign up if you haven't. It is simple, only need your email and name.

THanks,

Sort of, yes. But #4960 looks completely different now, after being completely rebuilt and "modernized" for Grand Canyon service, and I sure wouldn't want a model of THAT. However, that is just my opinion.

The CB&Q/C&S 2-10-2 project has already been "discussed" with Scott Mann, some years ago. I believe the general thinking was, and is now, whether to do a CB&Q "O" Class 2-8-2 first, or the larger 2-10-2 classes for CB&Q/C&S. My personal preference is to offer the big USRA Heavy O-4 class 2-8-2 first, the the bigger 2-10-2 classes.

 ChipR posted

the C&S/CB&Q 2-10-2 is also correct for B&LE, Erie and PRR.

(USRA Type?)  I haven't spent much time on these.  But, I have my books coming.

If that's true wouldn't that be more viable for 3rd Rail when you include those other roads?

I might buy the 2-8-2, but would definitely go for the 2-10-2.

Between this and the Real Trains posts, I'm learning.  Thanks
