After speaking to Scott, I am contemplating purchase of the above; as always, I like to hear from folks on their operating experiences with locomotives and operating cars. Would be grateful for any insight.
thank you in advance,

Brad, I have had the SP version of 3rd rail's mogul. I waited for what seemed like years as I had ordered it when it was advertised as a High Iron offering. Any way, it is a great running locomotive that is not overwhelming on the layout. The detail is great, sound good. It is so smooth operating that I use is for a lot of switching movements. My layout is all Lionel Fastrack and I have experienced no problems on any tunouts, etc.. I am sure you will be happy with it if you choose to purchase one.

THanks---is the tender coupler electo---cannot find any info on this!
We have many 3rd Rail steam locomotives and are very happy with their performance, reliability, and 3rd Rail service when needed.
Now being "spoiled" we have only purchased 3rd Rail and Weaver steamers for some years now, mostly 3rd Rail of late.

Yes, it has an electrocoupler on the tender.
My 3rd Rail SP Mogul runs like a fine switch watch and is a delightful little locomotive. Here are some photos of it - small next to the UP 4-12-2...
thanks===looks like I am in!
I purchased one of the SP moguls a couple of years ago like-new on "our favorite online auction".It's a extremely well detailed model and runs great.I can't say enough good things about 3rd rail locomotives.

I did a magazine review on it. I am pretty sure it was published. I talked to two different restorers about the prototype, one of whom made a real one run under steam.
As I recall, i gave it pretty high marks.
just had a fine conversation with Scott and I am now the owner of said locomotive!
stoked!!!
Good choice BradA! I love big steam, but I really like my SP Mogul as it's nice to have some smaller engines to balance out the stable. I'm hoping Sunset 3rd Rail does some more smaller steam going forward now that the ERR boards are smaller. I'm just guessing the tender size is the limiting factor, but some smaller and more affordable steam may entice more people to try a brass model rather than fear them, at which point Scott will have them instantly addicted! He did me!
Audi,
I would imagine that due to tech improvements, they will be able to pack more into a small tender and add more choices to customers---of course demand and awareness will play into it. Lionel has been able to grow a nice business with Shay's; surprised they have not done climax or another Heisler...
Or a small articulated logger...
Did this acquisition use all your Samson funds? Just curious if you are still in the market. There will be a lot of forum members heading to York soon so they may be able to locate something for you. I know I saw one at the fall show there, but I'm not fortunate enough to go to this one. If you don't land one by the fall show then let me know and I'll keep my eyes open.

Yup... I will have to digest a while... :-) I have a fair amount of layout work to do, sO I will break from new engines for a spell... or try to!
I am also going to wait and see what Scott offers later this year; I have an SP&S on order, so I can wait until next year---
