I haven't seen this posted on the 2 Rail Forum yet, so my apologies if it has, but just noticed a new GP30 model offering in O Scale on  3rd Rail/Sunset's website. ATSF GP30s in 2 Rail have always been on my bucket list so I am really happy about the announcement. I'd be interested in ICG as well but doesn't look like they made the cut.

The ATSF/BNSF Patched units would go great on the layout that I'll be building soon, since I will be modeling the ATSF/BNSF and UP between the early 1990s to the present day. A BN/BNSF Patched GP30 would be nice, too. I'd also love if 3rd Rail would make a GP39E/M/V (1990s BN GP30 rebuilds) and a BNSF GP39-3 (further rebuilds of ex-BN and ex-ATSF GP30s).

As always road names can and will be added.  I was going to suggest Conrail as well even though I'll be most interested in PRR ones.  While GP30s are outside of my modeling timeframe for the PRR, I think they will still be a nice addition to the freight motive power pool.

Yep. I asked Scott to add Chessie System as they inherited tons of them from B&O and C&O. He put Chessie up yesterday. This is going to get expensive for me, but the GP30 is my favorite diesel so gotta pony up. There are SO many I want though... I hope it is a success and we see multiple runs over the next few years. I didn't order PRR this time which is killing me because I'm assuming the Trainphone antennae will be modeled. Can you confirm Jonathan?

There are many still in service with Shortlines and tourist railroads as well that aren't on the list so I'm hopeful that we could get follow on runs. I would be all over the Reading and Northern, New Hope and Ivyland, etc... Have to get my Chessie, B&O, and GN secured first though. I'm also trying to drum up support for CP Rail 5000 and 5001. If anyone else wants CPR let Scott know. He said he's open to whatever gets enough requests.

Jonathan,

Lucky you. Your favorite diesel happens to be one that is pretty popular. Mines is the GP20...oh well.

Hi other Jonathan!

My preference would be for the as delivered GP30 in PRR with the trainphone antenna for two reasons.  First it has not been commonly done, and more selfishly, it is closer to the time period I model in 2 rail!

However, at this time the true answer is we are a long way away from an announcement and a developed project.  FAs are still on my plate for research first.

Totally understand. Maybe by then I can afford to add to my pre-order list. I have FAs in Erie ABA and GN ABA on order so looking forward to those as well. I'm willing to bribe you to do road numbers that Erie ran on the Mahoning division if it helps :-)

I was holding off the FAs until I saw the GP30 options.  So many nice options, makes my decision harder.  Thinking now towards SAL FAs and either B&O or Chessie GP30.  I have the Lionel GP30 versions of CSX, Chessie, and PRR with trainphone.  All tmcc with ERR upgrades.  I have a weakness for GP30.

You and me both!

I have ordered 4 Chessie, 1 B&O Sunburst, and 1 GN so far. I could honestly REALLY go for PRR, CP Rail, CGW, CNW, SOO, and NKP from the Class 1 list. But I would also LOVE to see a future run of Shortlines and Tourist roads like Ohio Central, Reading and Northern, New Hope & Ivyland, etc... There are so many that could be done! I'm beside myself happy for this project to finally come to light. I have been badgering Scott for years. Sorry Scott

Yes, I would prefer a prototypical paint scheme for the B&O units that incudes the capitol dome logo.

Chessie is also a welcome addition.

You're not saying the sunburst wasn't prototypical right, because it was. I would actually prefer the Capitol Dome logo over the Sunburst scheme as well. There is plenty of time and I'm sure they will go with whatever is more popular so I wouldn't let that prevent you from ordering.

While it is a little early to discuss specifics for any one road, I will simply state that as always, we will sweat the details to the best of our ability.  Like every project, once the pre-orders hit critical mass Scott will direct me to start research and then all the road specific variations and details will be catalogued so design for tooling can start in earnest.

It is interesting seeing how much traction this offering has received already.

Jonathan,
I think we are seeing a bit of a trend towards people wanting to see more offerings of “recent” diesels and Wanting Accurate, High Quality product. IMHO 🤔Cheers 😉

If it were Atlas, I'd say no... after 20 years  plus of grumbling that it ain't a Reading engine without the rain gutters on the cab (which is an item that is not easily added after painting).

I don’t think Atlas ever put RDG rain gutters on their cabs. I have many Atlas RGD engines and none of them have it. I have a few Overland units with the correct rain gutters, which might be the only way to get RDG rain gutters in O scale.  It would be nice to know if the RDG unit will have these and also if it’s an early or late paint scheme and road number.

Don't forget folks, if ultimately you can't get your specific configuration, there are plenty of paints available from x and really fast service with custom decals from y.  For 2 Rail at least, I think there will be an obscene number of freight cars available soon thanks to 3D printing technology, however painting and decaling will be necessary to finish.  Time to get the airbrush out again:-)

Very true. However, there are lots of little road specific details that would be really difficult to fix. It may not seem like it, but there were quite a few variations on GP30s. For my beloved Chessie it depends on which sub road we are talking about, B&O or C&O. There were phase Is and phase IIs in Chessie. The C&O units have a cab that is a different size on the engineer vs. the fireman's side. Windows on the back of the cab are different sizes too. Horn placement and type were different. I know people that are very interested in the NKP version, but they want to know for sure that they are getting a horizontal MARS light and recessed bell on the nose. I am such a fan of the 30 that I will likely get at least one even if it is a generic offering. If it is road specific, then I will take all 4 roadnumbers.

It is interesting to draw the parallel to the current HO GP30 projects. I looked at ScaleTrains and their project has like 70 bullet points for the road details they are doing.
