After admiring the offerings of 3rd Rail/Sunset Models for many years, I finally took the plunge and purchased my first 3rd Rail diesel engine. Last night, as I was reading the enclosed manual, I saw a section that said my train contained TMCC, Railsounds ERCC etc, all designed to work with Lionel ZW or equivalent transformers...but not with an MTH Z-1000 transformer. They way this is worded isn't quite clear IMO. Does that mean that the engine itself will not run with a Z-1000? Or is it only these features that won't run with a Z-1000, but the engine itself will run forward and backward in normal conventional mode? (I intend to run this in conventional mode for the time being.) I don't want to ruin the boards or electronic on this expensive item by subjecting it to my own trial and error.

Has anyone else had any experience with running a 3rd Rail engine with a Z-1000? Another option is a Pure Power Dual transformer from MRC that's currently sitting in storage....maybe someone with a greater electrical background than I can tell me whether you can power a 3rd Rail engine with something like this. ( I do have a query in to Sunset Models, but am curious to hear what other Forumites have to say.)

Yes, and I heard back from him yesterday. Here's the response regarding the compatibility issue. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing this with others who, like me, may be a little fuzzy on the whole electronics thing!

The Z1000 and older Z750 transformer is a CUT WAVE transformer. It is
cutting parts of the sine wave of AC, to lower the power to the
track. The result is a skinnier pulse to the track but the voltage
can be at the limit of the electronics. We have seen customers burn
up their older TMCC electronics with this, so we are warning
customers not to use this type of transformer with our models and electronics.
