Hi Folks,

Back here at the factory. The GM Train of Tomorrow has been inspected, packed and in a container to arrive in the US December 4th. If you think you missed out, you still have a chance. We have in 3 Rail: 3 UP "City of Seattle" E7 + 4 Dome Car Sets available for reserve. We have about 10 GM "Train of Tomorrow" E7 + 4 Dome Car Sets available for Reserve. Once gone, they will a part of history. Only 20 UP and 55 GM Sets were produced in 3 Rail. You probably won't ever see these on the secondary market. So come and gettem.

There is a lot of activity here at our factories. Below I will summarize.

As many of you know, our Plastic Factory has been closed for almost 2 years, delaying our projects the same. The builder has 2 facilities, one for plastic (Closed), the other brass models. He has moved all his equipment to the Brass facility and is finally up and running. Why did this happen? The city that the Plastic Factory was in wanted to take the building and property using eminent domain. Resisting was futile and that caused all sorts of repercussions. One of which was a lock down on our tools and machinery to produce the plastic parts. But now all is up and running at the other facility.

I returned from visiting this factory and am happy to report that the Modernized HW Coach project that has been so long delayed is finally in production. It should be finished in late December for a January/ February delivery.

This also opens up our plans to rerun some of our 12-1 / 8-1-2 Sleepers, Diner and Observation cars and some new projects that have been on hold.

At our main factory the GM Train of Tomorrow project has left the facility by container and will arrive in December. Don't count on a Christmas delivery, but we will try. There is no telling what delays we will have at the port at such a critical time for retailers.

Next in the hopper is the Timken 4 Aces #1111 (Coal), and NP A1 #2626 in both Oil and Coal. Once I have a sample pictures I will post them here. I think you will be amazed at the amount of detail on this model. Very few of these being produced, only 120 total, 2R/3R Timken + NP. We hope to be sold out with in days of them arriving.

Also in production now are the New RDC in ABS plastic. We have sent out pickup notices on these to make sure our orders to the factory are accurate to the reservations. Both the Timken and RDC will be done in December for a January to February delivery.

That will conclude our 2014 productions. But there is more....

Our facility in the Philippines is hard at work making the Erie Berkshires. We are told to get ready for a January Inspection. So I expect to get these in by March of 2015.

Furthermore, we are putting the SF El Capitan and Finish Sets into production in January for a Feburary to March delivery as well.

After that, things get a bit fuzzy schedule-wise. It will probably follow like this:

F7 Diesels: April 2015

CP P2 Mikados: May 2015

Cincinnatian / Powhatan Cars: June 2015

Cincinnatian P7 Pacific: July 2015

Chrystal Ball Says another Diesel for the late summer.

D&RGW L-131 2-8-8-2 by the end of 2015. Order came in quickly.

That's what I know so far. I hope all of you have a great Holiday Season.

Cheers,

Scott Mann

Now it's time for you to do the C&O K3/K3a "Super Mikado" with both tenders!.......Thanks in Advance..................................................Brandy!

Sunset/3rd Rail announced the C&O K3/K3A models quite a few years ago, as well as the NYC H10a/H10b mikes, but insufficient reservations/orders caused both to not be produced.

On behalf of all of us who ordered the ToT, I would like to thank Scott for having the foresight and courage to produce this train. It would have never been made in my opinion if Scott had not taken the initiative.

And what an opportunity for those who have not yet ordered it to have a few sets available that they can put their name on.

This will certainly be a landmark passenger train. I had the opportunity to see it firsthand at the recent York Meet and it is spectacular. Here is a photo to remind you how good it really is.

Now you're talking!  I have one of those EMD Training Center, i.e. "School car", models in HO, plus I have the company photographs & Styling and painting drawing for the car. I would LOVE to have a correct, SCALE model of this in O Scale.

I would add my voice to this as well.

Was discussed at some length.  Not going to happen.  The car would have to be brass. There are only 70 total sets made.  It would have required it be the 5th car in the set to get to 70 copies and at 70 copies the car would have cost $500+.  The set price would have then gone up to $2000+  No one who was asked was interested in the 5 car set for $2000+

Please be aware that the car pictured above had NOTHING to do with the GM Train of Tomorrow. The EMD Service Dept. had 2 different "School Cars" that were used by the Training Dept. to tour the railroads and train shop crafts and operating personnel on the new EMD diesel units.

With all due respect, HW, may I humbly disagree with your claim. I believe that image above is indeed that of "The Blue Goose" dormitory/baggage car. Note it's decoration, unique to the Train of Tomorrow. An excerpt from Ric Morgan's fine book, The Train of Tomorrow; Panels painted silver below the belt line and three silver stripes near the roof line were added to match the exterior of the four dome cars. The quote aptly describes that of the car pictured above. Added; The remodeled Momitor-type heavyweight car was built in 1925 from plan 3951, lot 4885 by Pullman Standard as one of 18 club-buffet-baggage cars used on Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's National Limited. With the addition of badges and no further livery alteration suggests that this photograph was taken shortly thereafter it's service on the Train of Tomorrow.

While a 5 car set would have been cool, I'm funding my ToT by selling off my excess trains and CoinStarring my loose change.    An extra $500 would have likely priced me out of this set at this time (daughter in college).

I'm very much looking forward to receiving my engine/4 car set!

P. 59 of "Streamliners: History of a Railroad Icon" features an add by GM for the TofT that appeared in the "Saturday Evening Post." Four domes and an engine are depicted in an artist's rendering with a cutaway of the observation car--very cool.

I really enjoy the artwork devoted to trains of that era and have several GM renderings of F and E units in various liveries.

A quick google search yielded the ad and other T of T images can be found at this link:

FWIW...

The 'other' publisher...from Milwaukee...has recently shipped a new quarterly "Trains of the '40's".  It has lots of nice articles/photos from the era...including a lengthy spread on GM's ToT....a nice complement to 3rd Rail's release.  It's at our store (LHS) now, so I would expect the same at LHS's/newsstands throughout.

"Just wanted to take a moment to commend you for the time you've taken to communicate accurate information to your end-clients here, namely the consumer.  It is a model that ALL importers should strive to achieve as a matter of "best practices" in today's business environment.

It hasn't gone unnoticed.

David"

Well said, David. I could not agree more.

Wanted to take a second and thank 3rd Rail for the GM ToT.  I know I'm late to the party, but I just unpacked mine today and had time to examine it.

I didn't reserve a set and was lucky enough to get one of the last few that wasn't claimed. A big thank you to a forum member for your notification a few sets were left.  You know who you are~

The locomotive is a thing of beauty, as is the rest of the set.  Not being a diesel guy, and having all UP steam, I welcomed this new addition.  I'm impressed by the detail and engineering of the drive line.  Really impressed.  It's what I've come to expect based on the 3rd Rail steamers I own, but this diesel is incredible.

But, the heart of this set are the fantastic passenger cars!  I dug through the box to get to the observation car first...stunning is all I can say.  Heavy, massive look, well detailed, and all around excellent finish.  The latter describes every car in the set.

Only one problem with 3rd Rail-once you buy the stuff, you want more of it!

BTW, I bought the UP Yellow GM ToT-what else would you expect from a UP guy?
