I bought the Lionchief Polar Express set and my 4 year old can not wait for me to open it and run it. I keep telling him to wait. He will ask me every day. We have not set up anything for Christmas yet. Add to that I was looking at the Little Lionel Polar Express set on the computer and left the room and when I came back he was looking at it and showing his mom. He was all excited and kept asking if he could have it. He heard me tell his mom I had bought him a present and so he daily goes down the list of options, like a riding police car he asked for or a firetruck and daily adds, "A POLAR EXPRESS TRAIN LIKE YOURS!! as he jumps up and down. I always tell him I will not tell him what I bought besides, would you REALLY want to run a Christmas train year round? He excitedly says , "I LOVE POLAR EXPRESS"

Our 5 year old loves the Polar Express. He has had the set for 2 years this Christmas. Plays with it all year round.

Cute story, he has a lot of company who also love the Polar Express.
Hey, why not Polar Express all year? Wait till he gets an eyeful of the real 1225 back in steam.
My hearing isn't great, but I can still hear the jingle bell

There is something sacred about the way we adults can reach children, and in the way they reach back to us. It is almost sacramental. Your story proves it. IMO, in that cheer of his,"I love Polar Express," he is actually cheering you.
Just a thought.

It gets better. I got a new HO loco today and decided to reset up my HO track. It is MTH so I wanted to add the DCS commander and he stayed right with me to help. He would bring me the screw driver etc after staying behind me to go run the new train. After I ran into an electrical problem, he asked about running the Polar Express we just got. He must have asked over 20 times. I took it out of the brown box much to the excitement of the other, older children as well. They too wanted me to set it up. I told them we will wait until we set up the tree next week. They were saddened by my reply. The 4 year old continued to sit on my lap and look me in the eye and constantly ask me to let him run it in the sun room, or on my already set up O scale track. If he does well with the Little Lionel Polar Express than I will build him a 4x5 layout to put in his room and have him help me paint and decorate it and give him a train. I bought him a MTH Pennsylvania freight starter set a year ago. He just does not know it yet. It matches my MTH premier K4 some so he will like it. He seems to like having copies of my trains.
Sounds like he just wants to be "Just Like Dad" I HOPE that you are careful about Smokin, Drinkin, Cussin and Chasin Wild Women around him

Those statements further support my point (and Doug's) don't they. And I am sure you know that those moments when you two are building the prospective layout together, every second of that time in that experience will be golden to him (and to you, of course as you well know.)

Nope, I hate leaving the house and when I am away can't wait to get back. Though children do things to make even a preacher want to cuss I make an effort not to any more. I have a great wife so no need trying to get another one. They are too hard to train to overlook my bad habits to get a different one.
He hit me up today to run the Polar Express. I told him again to wait until we set up the tree first.
Awesome story.
My Daughter is 3 & know exactly what you are saying so well I can picture it!
Kids are great
