I have a quick questions for everyone.

I have a black standard gauge 400E that I bought sometime ago.  The locomotive is fine but the coupler at the end of the tender that attaches to the cars and the drawbar connector that attaches to the locomotive are reversed.  Other than that, the locomotive and tender are OK.

My question is, how do I dislodge the latches that hold her couplers on so that I can switch them.  I've tried loosening them with a pair of pliers to no avail so I stopped since I didn't want to damage the tender.  Any help that anyone could give would be must appreciated.  Thanks and Happy Easter!!!

  • Rear of Tender: This is the rear of the tender with the drawbar that should be connected to the rear of the locomotive.
  • Front of Tender: This is the front of the tender that should be connected to the loco but it has the wrong coupler.

Before you try to switch them, investigate that you may have a one-of-a-kind factory error there that might well significantly increase the value of yourt 400E and tender.

Running it as is may cause observers to ask questions, but if the the answer is "That's the way it came from the Lionel factory in 1932", it might be more than worth it!

There are some screws at the bottom of the tender that would released it from the base and I presume that I can flip it around to make it correct when pulling a trains.  Thank you for the suggestion!!!!!!

I supposed that it's always a possible of a factory error so I would need to investigate as you've suggested.  Thanks for your help!!!!!

Someone probably had the tender apart and put the body on backwards. The original Lionel prewar tenders had the coupler and drawbar attached by a special pressed in rivet with a shoulder, they did not use screws there. It doesn't look as if your tender ever had the coupler and drawbar off of the frame, so I'd guess it was taken apart and put together backwards.

The rivets, drawbar, and couplers are readily available from Jeff Kane, George Tebolt, and Olsen's if you really want to knock the rivet out, but I'd just take the body off and turn it around. Seriously doubt it was a factor error.
