On this icky January day a year and a month ago, the train had an ex-Chicago & Northwestern SD40-2 leader, still equipped with a functional gong bell. Seeing a gong in operation outside of a museum was rare in 2023, and still is today. Later in 2023, the Homer City Generating Station would close, resulting in the transfer of the B&P SD50s to the Maryland Midland, and the dispersal of several SD40-2s. With the arrival of remanufactured BNSF/CSX Dash 9s, many of the rest of the SD40-2s, and almost all the SD60M/Is, have been sent to other railroads in Ohio and elsewhere. To cap off the changes, the RIBT and counterpart BTRI now usually run in darkness with late evening call times.
