96B52A22-FE10-434F-BBB5-6AD9AAFEB4F4My new-to-me DL&W Northern (6-18003) has a short in the 3-wire tether. Upon inspection, 2 of the 3 wires have come off their tender board attachment points.   1. Is this tether only for the Sound of Steam feature ?  2. Any idea which of the 2 wires go where ?  The prior owner’s repair has an abundance of solder - wonder if they are still electrically isolated ? 😕.   So much for the “brand new” eBay description!  (I did get a seller credit)

Thks !

shows as sound of steam power connection

From my 783 with SOS notes.

  • The engine black wire that matches to the tender brown wire goes to a ground on the engine housing.
  • Then engine blue to the tender blue wire.  Attaches to the motor field, center wire connection, the ground.  "Sense" wire.
  • The engine black wire that matches to the tender black wire goes to positive/center-rail post that the field and E-unit plug wire are connected to.

This picture is of the board that used foam strips to mount to the tender with an extra wire from the speaker to the aluminum foil in the middle of the foam mount.   From my 783.  They switched to a plastic mount without the extra wire to the speaker as yours shows.  That is now in my 783 tender.   Hope it helps for wire order if you know where they go.  They also used something like a glue stick to hold the wires from pulling.

Grandkids love the sound of steam.
