I recently purchased a like new 6-18410 Lionel Pennsylvania Burro Crane from 1989, and last night I ran her for the first time.   She seemed to run a little rough (and loud), although I lubricated her per the instruction sheet.  Is this normal for this motorized unit, or is there some other area that needs lubrication?  Also, per the instruction sheet, the brushplate set screw must be removed to lubricate the armature shaft.  How tight should the set screw be when it is reinstalled?  I originally tightened her down to where the top of the set screw was flush with the brushplate and then backed off a 1/2 turn per the instructions, but this seemed too tight.  When I first took off the shell, the set screw was showing about 4 threads.  Is this the normal setting for the set screw?

Any tips would be appreciated.

To adjust the set screw on a Lionel motor, I check how much the armature can move up and down.

On all the Lionel motors I've serviced, you can see the armature. I gently turn the wheels back and forth to see how much the armature moves up and down. I never measured the travel, but I'd guess that I usually allow about 1/32 - 1/16 of an inch.

IMHO, burro cranes can be a bit on the noisy side when compared to regular locomotives. Double check the lubrication. When an operating piece, such as your Burro crane is stored for a long time, any sintered bearings may dry out, and require some extra lubrication. I like to use a light oil. Often I will put a little excess on the bearing, and let it soak in for a while. Then I carefully wipe away the excess. (this technique requires disassembly)

Too much oil/lubricant will attract dust and dirt, and can actually be detrimental.
