I've never played with one of these TMCC Giraffe Cars from 1998 until very recently, and the one I have seems to exhibit some strange behavior.

The short version: the ElectroCouplers (and the sounds that go along with them) only work when addressing the car as part of a Train/Lash-up. They don't work when addressing the car regularly as an Engine.

I can think of two conclusions:

1) This is normal behavior. (Note the instruction booklet seems to indicate that the ElectroCouplers should exhibit normal behavior, but it's contradictory in some sections.)

2) There's a reprogramming code that needs reset in order for the ElectroCouplers to activate normally. Unfortunately, this car takes an unusual R2LC (C04?) and it might have an unusual code for reprogramming, and I can't find where anything has been published about this.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have this car on my circus train with other "bobbing" head animal cars, when I stop the train I hear "welcome to York Pennsylvania" or the other recorded announcements.   I run DCS, haven't used TMCC in years, I'll try adding the car to my DCS as an engine & see what I can get it to do, when the ND basketball game is over. :-)

Chuck and Bill,

Thanks for the help.

This one sure is weird. When addressed as an Engine, the 1-4 volume controls work, as does the BOOST which causes the giraffe to duck along with the appropriate sounds. But the ElectroCouplers don't function.

When assigned to a Train, the couplers work fine, which indicates to me a software or programming issue.

I've attached a photo of the R2LC that was found inside. Unfortunately, the proper replacement doesn't appear to be available any longer, but I noticed the one for the later Lion car can still be purchased. I'll have to give it a shot.
