Maybe so, but I'm still trying to understand the significance behind the occasion. What makes year 115 more of an event then year 114 or 116 since the celebration itself came about as an afterthought to sell excess inventory?

The answer is this stunning engine. Any excuse to attempt to achieve perfection is acceptable in my thinking.

2015 = 100th Anniversary of Lionel O gauge ?

Maybe this would of been a better marketing technique ?

Regardless, still is a stunning locomotive.

Better to just conclude that this is a beautifully produced locomotive you get because you just like it and want to have it -- regardless of the price.  There is no rationalizing the $2K price.  None whatsoever.

We all know how this locomotive came into being.  Charlie Ro's P/E black Berks that came out of the same production run as these silver Berks were originally available at a pre-order price of $1050 if I recall correctly.  That's nearly HALF the price folks will be paying for this 115th Anniversary locomotive done up in silver plating... or whatever the process Lionel's factory used.

Personally, I can't get past the fact that two locomotives coming out of the same production run have nearly a $1,000 difference in price just because of the finish -- no matter how exotic Lionel chooses to describe the silver paint finish and limited availability of 250 units.  That's just all marketing speak.  A couple hundred dollars difference MAX.  But $1,000?  No way!!!

But for those who want this locomotive at all costs, just enjoy it and don't look back.  We all have our vices.     Hopefully, Lionel might someday produce a set of passenger cars in matching silver finish to complete the package... much like we P/E enthusiasts have with the Gold P/E train.

That being the case, this engine, already a beautiful Berk in black would have been far more desirable in silver had it simply stated "LIONEL LINES" on the tender.
IMO, thanks to a business model that promotes antiquation for progress, celebrating the 115th year with an overpriced instant collectable seems more like grasping at whatever remains of the current DOA Lionel collectable market.

Now THAT I would agree with 1,000%!!!   Toy train history is littered -- if I can use the term so bluntly -- with meaningless "instant collectible" items, like odd anniversary locomotives and/or sets.  Even the prime anniversary products like Lionel's 100th Anniversary Gold Hudson w/matching Gold Caboose are no longer high-demand products.  So I don't understand Lionel's grasp for pricing an odd 115th Anniversary loco in the stratosphere -- other than the fact that they know they can and stuff sells anyway.

Heck, had the tender been decorated with "Lionel Lines", I might even have been drawn to it for $1500 or so.    But the 115th Anniversary logo really detracts from what is otherwise a very stunningly produced locomotive, IMHO of course.  Sometimes simpler really is better, and this would have been one of them.
