I have one of the first n&w railking j the one with the af pistion smoker.Any way for some reason it would only go backward.Went to the little choo choo in spencer nc.There was nothing wrong with it.I was relived that it was working. But when I got home put on the track.Operated like it should then I noticed something about the rear drive wheel. The traction tire came off."YOU HAVE GOT TO !$#@^% ME!!"Well the next day back to spencer. As I got closser to the site.I noticed N&W passgener cars.As I got to the intersection to turn into a parking lot. There set the real 611 steam and breathing. My heart jumped into my brain. What luck what are the odds.I hoped out of my car got my railking 611.The lord must have smiled at me thaty day.For right in front of the real 611was a perfect spot for my j.I set in right in front of the real j.And with my phone started taking pictures.Thats right little j meets big j.And heres the nice thing about it.They let her move a bit down the track.Again with my phone this time vedio camrea action. With 611 blowing her deep rich whistle of hers.In age my mother has a few years older than it is.But I don't talk about that when I around her.

Great story, thanks for sharing! I forgot all about the AF piston chuffer. So simple and reliable. Now days we have electronic chuffers that make you wonder when they will take their last breath!
BRING BACK THE PISTON CHUFFER!

Nice story. Can you explain what the AF piston chuffer is?
Hi Harry,
American Flyer (I think some Lionels also) had a cylinder connected to the smoke unit. The cylinder had a piston (much like a car or air pump) that mechanically bellowed air through the smoke unit and out the smokestack relative to how fast the engine was moving. Even if you weren't running smoke it made a chuffing sound. Currently an ERR chuffer (electronic) is giving me a world of trouble. Sometimes new school can take a lesson from old school!

Maybe that traction tire was trying to tell you something and actually looking after you instead of dealing you another fit? Sounds like it must have turned out pretty good as you didn't even say whether you got the tire fixed after finding the real 611.
In my PW-equipment experience (I do have a bit), Lionel steamers did have a piston/cylinder arrangement as part of the smoke unit. My PW 2055 from my childhood certainly has one (there is linkage to one of the crossheads). They are not rare in modern steamers, either (K-Line; earlier Lionel scale NYC 4-6-0).
There is nothing particularly "American Flyer" about them, except that AF used theirs,
I guess, to make the "chuff". Lionel didn't miss out on anything - these PW AF steamers with "chuff" sound like nothing so much as aquarium pumps. ("Pocka-pocka-")

Oh I got it fixed and while in the store.I heared 611 whistle again looked out side.611 was backing up.Wow what a day thats all I can say.I ran the j a few nights ago.And it might not have all the fancy sound system. But it pulls a fare size train.
American Flyer's piston smoke unit was larger than Lionel's, and it also made a chuffing sound. Lionel's didn't.
