Hi,

I am doing a 3 day college tour with my son Drew next week, and will be near Roanoke on Tuesday. I would like to see the 611 in person if it is still there and on display. I only have a couple hours, 3-5PM, is that enough time to take in the museum and the O Winston Link museum?

Advice would be appreciated, thanks

The 611 is in a train shed directly behind and adjacent to the main museum building, with the 1218 sitting alongside her.  It's not really possible to get a good view of either locomotive if the museum isn't open.  You can see the shed better in this photo.

Wow Craig, College tour?!

I remember when you joined the forum. You used to put up pictures of you and your son playing with the trains. Time sure does fly. I have two kids of my three kids in college right now. It's really crazy how fast they grow up. My Oldest daughter is a senior at Bard College in Upstate New York and my son is a Freshman at George Washington University in DC.

Good luck in your College hunt, and have fun.

Wow are we getting old. LOL!! I guess it beats the alternative, not getting old. LMAO!!!

Mike and all,

Yes, its a little overwhelming too see Drew about to fly out of the nest. Time sure flies! We have a good relationship, and his interest in trains is still there.

Thanks for all the replies. As you can see we made it to the museum. We got there at 3:30 on Tuesday and had just enough time to see the muesum and yard, will have to go back for the O. Winston Link museum.

We got a real big kick out of seeing the 611, what a beauty 1218 is too, and the Wabash E8 in the backyard was awesome...cant wait to see the 611 in action, and get a ride.

After the museum closed we stopped at a Burger King, and drove back and ate in the car while doing some trainwatching at the museum, saw a good NS freight train come through, then we left, it was dark, and we got to see the neon signs illuminated: the H&C Coffee, Dr. Pepper, and the star on top of the mountain, all items I have seen at Miller engineering and seeing them in person was great, especially the coffee sign.

Thanks again folks for the advice, this place is a great.
