I agree. I first saw 611 when I was a kid and she was cold at the museum in Roanoke. I don’t know 100% if that was 1981 or 1980 but I really think it was ’81. I thought even then how cool it’d have been to have seen this under steam, not realizing that plans were afoot to have her steaming again. She was removed from the museum very soon after I saw her. The next time was a few years later, she was pulling trips for the Jacksonville chapter NRHS to Valdosta, GA. What a truly beautiful locomotive to see and hear.
I was a teenager with no license on the trips I went to see 611 in various places. I never got to ride behind her (I did get to ride behind 1218 soon afterward, though) but I was truly happy she returned to steam. I’m on the opposite side of the country and it’s unlikely I’ll get to ride behind her, but I’m so happy for those who can watch, hear and feel the raw power of an amazing locomotive.

I hear ya on that as well. I'm flying out from CA to ride behind 765 this year. It costs a lot with airfare alone but after hearing so many "ride them while you can" comments I've said "screw it" and go when I can. I already got to ride behind SP 2472 two years ago and now it's future is up in the air. I'm hoping 611 will be around next year because I'm marking her as the next one to ride behind.
Great job, where did you take these.
Wait, filming while driving?
I don't know much about running a steam engine, but in the first clip she looks and sounds as if
she's really "hooked up", short sharp blasts out the stack an runnin' easy!

Thanks! The first vid was taken from the Wilshire Ave. overpass (between Hwy. 601 and Old Charlotte road) in Concord. The chase was on Route 49 south of Harrisburg to where the mainline cuts off just past 485.

Well isn't that what cruise control is for?
Actually (and thankfully) the traffic was very light that morning. The video was a pleasant surprise as, believe me, I was doing more driving than filming! BTW, I'm using a Sony Action Cam which is their version of a GoPro.
I thought you were in NC. I am riding on it from Lynchburg to Petersburg in a few more weeks.
Impressive shots you made!
I took Saturday's trip behind the 611. No video, but I did get some still images. Here are a couple taken at O'Dark 30 (before boarding in Spencer):
There were a lot of folks out watching the train as it passed by, but one lady stood out:
We got back to Spencer after dark:
On Sunday, I took a couple of images as the train returned to Spencer from the morning trip:
Really cool!
Thank you.......
Peter
