On June 23-24, Norfolk Southern moved SR 630 on a two-day excursion from Spencer, NC to Roanoke, Virginia. Day 1 found the 630 following the Southern main from Spencer to Greensboro, then turned west to Winston-Salem, where she would spend the night.
Day 2. 630 heads up the N&W Punkinvine from Winston-Salem to Roanoke, Virginia. The lack of chasers seemed to fix itself for today. There were an estimated 50-70 cars following the train north out of Winston. Although not shown here, over 200 people turned out to greet the special in Bassett, VA, and a similar scene happened in Boones Mill. This was the first steam movement on these tracks since the late 1980s.
630 will operate employee trips out of Roanoke this weekend.
