Odd place to ask this question,  but has anyone heard of running emd 645 engines on natural gas?  My work has 3 stationary generators with this engine that we shut down for emissions compliance.   But if they could run on gas maybe they would be worth working on again 🤔 .

Any thoughts?

Please be aware that it is EMD and NOT "emd"!  Back in the 1950s the EMD 567 engines were using natural gas, in the oil fields. They had special heads with the gas valve, along with the EMD Unit Injector which supplied the pilot charge for ignition. In the more modern era, EMD had some 645 and 710 engines outfitted for LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) as well as CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). BN had at least one SD40-2 operating on LNG.

It really isn't so much the fact of having the 645 or the 710 engines effectively using various forms of natural gas, but the difficulties of compressing/liquifying the gas, and then having locomotive fueling facilities at required locations.

Any thoughts?
