I'm looking at a 6520 post war generator car that has a green generator. I have heard many stories about repro generators that have been made over the years. Is there a way to tell for sure that the generator on the car is original and not a recent remake? I do know the seller and he is not sure but I know he would let me take to car apart to inspect it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you have any searchlight car, any color, you can compare, the reproduction generators are about 1/8 inch shorter. If you can unscrew the generator from the frame, you can see the repo's mounting holes are not centered in the blank space meant for the screw holes, they are spaced further out to compensate for the shorter generator. The originals are perfectly centered.

Thanks for the tip. I think that I have a few original orange generators. I will make sure to take one with me when I look at the green one.

At least Some reproduction generators have a die flaw in the radiator grill, near the top.

I beleive it is a little triangular flat spot.

If you see the die flaw, then I guess you don't have to remove the generator to check the screw holes.

Thanks to Chuck for the tip on the length, and screwholes!

I have a couple of maroon generators that I've never been sure about.

That is exactly why I don't want to pay too much for this. I've heard there were 100's if not 1,000's of reproductions made over the years and some are real good at fooling even the most educated collectors.
