Hey,

I am fiddling around with a 2671 whistling tender, that won't whistle. I'm learning by trying and don't mind if I can't fix it but one wire is attached from the top of the coil to the brush plate, the one that broke I believe goes from..somewhere inside the middle of the coil and that's where it snapped. Is it worth fixing by soldering something or just get new guts.

Thanks for the help

Hi I'm sending you a couple of pictures from the repair book. It looks like the coil from the whistle is made from the brushplate thru coil  to ground. Check it out with meter to see if wire is actually broken. I have found very few are broken. Most of the time the contact is jammed or just not making concact.  If wire is broken yes you should replace whole coil

I’ve encountered these a few times. The other end is inside the field coil i.e. the first set of windings. If there is a nub sticking out, you can file the varnish off and solder to it. In your case, there is no nub left. Only way to fix is unwind the field an then carefully rewind it. I have never been successful at doing this but others here have been.

The only other option is procure another field assembly which should be easy enough. The plastic body whistles like this one are very common so used parts are plentiful.
