Wow, don't recall ever watching a train video with such a clear view of its angry flickering firebox..
Thanks for posting.
Joe
Good shots!
no pesky diesel!
Not there, they gained the E9's in Hearne when they caught up with the express.... The video is in the other 844 thread.
i was thinking specifically of the heritage unit that apparently caused the problem.

The Heritage unit didn't cause the problem!
Has an official decision been made just what caused the problem with the drivers?
See thread below.
"The Heritage unit didn't cause the problem!"
well, it started the dominoes falling that led to the power reverse being set and throttle opened, right?

No, it didn't!!!!!
well, obviously, my layman's mind has failed to grasp something.
here is my interpretation of what i have read so far.
844 approaches station stop and normal braking actions taken.
train does not slow, because diesel is unexpectedly still pushing.
other actions taken by crew, train not slowing, diesel still pushing.
train put into emergency triggering sanding.
somewhere in here the diesel drops out.
power reverser engaged to put engine into reverse, throttle applied, drive wheels lock up and skid for some (20 feet?) distance putting flat spots on the tires.
train stops.
it seems to me that the diesel continuing to push had something to do with this. was this because of actions taken/not taken by crew? i thought the implication was a malfunction of some sort (prior issues with this unit reported, unit being "debugged" after the incident).
i seek only understanding.
i will trust you to straighten me out!
AWESOME. I'd be laying hard on that whistle too! That brings tears to my eyes. Forget about the senseless debate about "who shot John", she's back.....
PS i am very impressed with how quickly 844 was back in service.
The 844 is in Wichita now, and will be heading for Topeka tomorrow. No matter what..or whom caused the problem the UP is still doing things up nicely.
I do not get it, why did the engineer put the engine in reverse if the diesel never kept pushing the train?????
I would gather it's a human error thing based on what has been posted.
No wonder everyone is so closed mouth about it. A very major human error.
844 just passed through Kearney, NE heading back to Cheyenne. Great to see it back online going down the line.
Nice photo Ken. I agree, it's great she got back on her feet quickly.
That is good photo!
Thanks for the memories.
