Hotwater,

I don't have my book in front of me that you suggested that I buy so I will just have to describe it to you...the silver cap-like-things seen on the trailing truck and on all of the wheels of the tender of the 844...in videos that I have seen of the FEFs painted grey, it looks like most of them are blackened, yet when the FEFs are painted black, it seems that they return to silver.  Is this correct?

Sorry for the delay, as I just returned late last night from Trainfest, up in Wisconsin.

The UP painted the bearing covers on the 800 class, the 3900 class, and the 4000 class steam locomotives with "bright aluminum". They also painted the engine truck wheel hubs the same "bright aluminum".

Scalecoat "aluminum" paint is an excellent match, and is what I use on my UP steam models.

No problem on the delay.  I hope it was a good trip.   And thanks for the response.

So when the covers appear to be blackened on the grey 800s, it is just a matter of "weathering," etc...?  I think every photograph that I have seen of the 844 when it was repainted grey (1987 - 1990 or '91??, was it?), the bearing covers appear to be black.  I can't tell too well in The Mighty 800 book, but they also appear to be darker...even though the pics are in black and white.  I was just curious.  I'm doing some work to my grey Lionel version and that was something I just wanted clarification on.

Thank again for the insight.

I don't believe ANY of the FEF class 800's had the "bright aluminum" bearing covers when they carried the two tone gray paint scheme in regular service. The UP really didn't begin applying the "bright aluminum" paint on the engine truck wheel hubs & journal covers until about 1954 or 1955, and by then pretty much all the two tone paint schemes had been removed.

Many times what appears to be painted journal covers in black & white photo is actually the sun light reflecting off the clean, black, angled bearing cover, thus it "looks gray or silver".
