Here is a portion of the email I sent Alan a couple of days ago:

"Alan, I  cannot think of a person who would be better qualified to be the OGR National Sales and Advertising manager than you, and I would say that even if you were not my friend, but based solely on your knowledge of the trains with which OGR is involved, your track record and managerial skills, and your ability (grace) to deal with people.

I am not saying that you would try (successfully) to sell a freezer to an Eskimo, but I do believe that you can make the subject matter, whatever it may be, interesting to your audience. And once you have their ear, they can’t help but to like what you have to say. Maybe I should buy some stock in OGR."

I am sure that you will do a superb job at OGR; and as has been said, you, OGR, and all of us are winners with this turn of events!

Alan--the other one--will remain in Arkansas, although he certainly would be welcome to move here if he so desired and we can easily provide him with office space.  That, however, would mean dismantling the superb layout he has, and that would mean lengthy delays in any features I might be able to garner from him on the editorial side of things.  We can't have that, can we?

But you're right about the pretty white stuff that tends to blanket the landscape, off and on, for about four months of the year.  It definitely is conducive to staying indoors and playing trains.

Note to Jason re: his post just above this one:  I'm planning a visit to Jay's for lunch tomorrow--their outlet in North Lima--which is walking distance from a True Value hardware store that sells O gauge (mostly Lionel) and Large Scale trains.  I like to check in there every once in a while to see how things are going.  The hot dogs at Jay's are fine, but I really like the French fries, liberally sprinkled with vinegar.

Alan,

Hope you enjoyed both Jay's and the hardware store. When I was very young my dad took me to a train shop in that area, night well have been the True Value in question, lots of memories there. As my memory serves it is a raised building next to an actual RR track? You wil have to bear with me last I was there i would have been 6 or 7.

Best,

jason

I am overwhelmed by the incredibly kind comments you all have made.  As in my first post above, thanks so much for taking the time to post your well wishes....they mean the world to me.  I really look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over time.  At least for now, Arkansas will be my home base....a "OGR World Headquarters Annex"!  I will be attending the Lionel Event August 17th and will be at the TCA York Fall meet.  Can't wait!!!

Alan

Way to go Alan! All this time I thought you where just another guy who knows alot about toy trains.

I'm so happy to see one of our posters reach the top of the O-Gauge family structure.

I always said that as a steadfast reader of the mag I love the adds almost as much as the articles. That in mind I will be looking foward to some good stuff down the road.

Good luck in your new endeaver buddy. Or should I say"OGR Add MAN"?

I love it when good things happen to good people.

Congratulations Alan and to OGR on your new position as Ad Sales Manager!

This is definitely a win-win for everyone. With your passion for the hobby you'll be able to develop long lasting relationship with current and future OGR Sponsors.

As they used to say on the "A Team", "I love it when a plan comes together!".

Hi Allan. Just got back from vacation today and saw a letter in the mail box from OGR. To my surprise (as was to everyone else) it was Rich Melvin's introduction of yourself to the OGR staff. This has to be a dream from heaven coming true for you and I wish you the best in this new endeavor.

jim r from bridgeboss.

P.S. hope to see you at York in October

You guys are gonna have to learn to keep your Allan's straight!  The old fart who edits the magazine--your's truly--is Allan.

The new kid who is going to grow the magazine to 164 pages by selling lots of ads is Alan.

When I see all these compliments, I get all puffed up thinking they refer to me, only to find that they are actually directed to the single-L Alan.

Hi Alan. Sorry about my misspelling- not exactly one of my fine attributes. Should I bring along another 48 inch shed to York for you? just kidding.

See you at York.

Allan....Mike Burnside has known me for over 30 years and still doesn't know how to spell my name!..LOL!!  Perhaps you and I need to just change our spelling to the more common "Allen" and get it over with!

Alan

Alan,

This is great news for you and for OGR!  Perfect symbiosis!

Generating more advertising revenue for OGR benefits us all in terms of ever continuing improvements in the quantity and quality of the content we all so eagerly await every month or so at our mailboxes.  As your success grows the bottom line at the magazine, I'm sure Rich and Allan will soon announce that OGR will be published 12 times a year!  (Sorry guys, I just couldn't help myself from saying that!)

Just a note about real estate brokerage....I'm in my 16th year of the business and it's not something that can be practiced part time....at least not well.  So, I hope that your efforts on behalf of OGR produce the handsome income that will allow you to devote your entire focus to the magazine while keeping a roof over the heads of your family as well as support your healthy model train addiction too!

GoodLuckBear

Once again, thanks guys!

Bear....you are correct about the real estate practice.  Fortunately, I have been at it only about a month...just a week prior to the OGR offer!!  My real love is marketing and advertising and of course this hobby so it is a perfect fit.  I will continue to be involved in real estate since I made a certain commitment to my broker but I can fulfill that with weekends and perhaps a day or so during the week.  It will be mainly my retirement "job" once OGR doesn't need me anymore!!  Anyway, thank goodness I am not a broker right now.  One thing for sure, the real estate market here is going gang busters.  One of our top agents has been listing and selling an average of 3 homes per day...around this neck of the woods that is pretty good!!

Thanks,

Alan

Alan Arnold is in the building!  Well almost, he is here in Ohio anyway He has already cased the joint at the Lionel Service Center in Canfield where all of us will be on Saturday, including Allan Miller, OGR Editor-in-Chief, and yours truly.

Alan will be at OGR International World Headquarters tomorrow morning for the executive tour, as befits our new Advertising Sales Manager.

Looking forward to meeting Alan.  Even going to wear a clean shirt for the occasion!

Ed Boyle

Well Everyone.....I made it to the OGR Headquarters.  After casing out Lionel as Ed said above, I headed down the road to scout out where my new "digs" was.....

I will have a complete report for all of you....perhaps in a separate thread....as I think all of you will find our meetings interesting.  While I won't bore you with the details I will tell you that I believe you will be very happy with the approach we will be taking and some of the new things we are planning for this publication.  I had a great time and am so proud to be part of the OGR family....

P.S.   Ed really did put on a clean shirt as he promised above....only problem was he did it in front of all of us during the meeting!!!  LOL!!!

Alan
