I just finished a mod that I'd like to share using Evan's new Mega chip LED. I've used the chips before and like them, but this one is the largest yet and appears to be the same size as the chips in my recent Woodland Scenics Door Factory (I'd have to take it off the layout to be sure, though). I've been working on a Postwar Southern F3 set (2356 ABA). After getting it back into great operating shape, I installed 5 mil LED bulbs behind the headlight lenses in both A units. A short brass tube Gooped to the back of the lens and the bulb Gooped into the tube. I got an idea for the B unit that could make use of the new Mega chip. I've never seen an illuminated B, so I ordered a 2343 pickup assembly which attached neatly to the rear truck (after the plate was removed) and 4 Mega chips. I attached each chip just below each porthole, so they would shine across to the opposite porthole (especially when viewed from the side). As has been the case with many of my LED projects, sometimes the bulbs are too bright for their intended use. I knock them down with a resistor. In this case, the light through the portholes was extremely bright, so I experimented with different resistor sizes and found that a 100 ohm resistor was (in my eyes) the best compromise. Connected them all together and the photos and short video below show the results. I'm extremely pleased with it as now all 3 units have some sort of illumination in them. Next up......my other F3 sets.
