As I mentioned elsewhere, I have ordered a replacement roller/brad set for this unit. Questions:

1. Does anyone have a unused loose roller and would be willing to measure it for me? I'd just like to get a feel for how large a new one is, and compare that measurement with the original that's on mine. For all I know, the current roller may in fact be almost "full" size, in which case I will hold off on replacing it until a later date.

2. How do you go about removing the mounting brad? It seems that the brad/roller assembly is attached to a rather thin brass piece, so I suspect one must be very careful so's not to distort that brass "arm".

I have to say there's something about this old transformer I find very charming...and I thank you in advance.

I can't help to answer your first question, but am looking forward to seeing the answer as well.  The ones I have been able to buy in the past have not been as big as the original flyer ones I was looking to replace.

But on your second question: I usually cut the old brad with wire cutters to remove it.  The harder part us crimping the new brad, because the ones I have been able to find are much harder than the originals.

Mark, what I found is that the roller disc rolling back and forth is gets worn down. And it gets resistive. A new disk has zero ohms. And worn disk measured and 1 ohm. T the voltage drops thru this one Ohm or so and it gets hot. The top of the transformer case gets hot. If your transformer gets hot on the top and handle is warm replace the roller disk. Buy a disk and the pin.

Yes, as I think I mentioned, the "disk" and "pin" ("roller' and "brad") are ordered and on the way. What I really wanted is a measurement of the physical size of the disk. I hoped to gauge the amount of wear I have by comparing the size of a new disk against the one that's currently on my example.

The windings are in really good shape, and it does not show any signs of "heating" while in use , so possibly replacing the disk may turn out to be not needed at this time.

Interesting. The new replacement roller arrived today and measures (only) 5/16ths across...

It appears that the existing roller in the 15B is not much smaller, and is working ok, so I guess I will keep it "as is" for the time being; that is, of course, unless any of you have a suggestion.
