I was reading Louis Grogan's book The Coming of the New York & Harlem RR this morning. I came to a part where it stated that the Harlem Division was the back up for through trains in and out of Grand Central (like the 20th Century Ltd) when the Hudson Division was blocked for some reason. It would hook up with the B&A in Chatham and then go on to Albany.

I got to thinking about a childhood memory....probably somewhere in 57-62 I was with my parents on the Bronx River Pkwy when I saw a New York Central passenger consist pulled by F units fly by.  As an adult, I have always told myself that I was imagining the memory. Now, I'm not so sure. It could be true?!

My mom used to like shopping at Cross County....we would take Pelham Pkwy, Allerton Ave, Gun Hill Rd or E233rd St to the Bronx River (the route depended on any other errands my parents needed to do).

I was stunned when I read it....but it makes sense to have an alternative route for their signature trains.

Art.....it may just be my fantasy......but it makes sense.....if the Central had an alternate route, which they did, I may not be dreaming! No way to tell.

Boy, to be a kid in the Bronx during that time again! I have a whole list of things I would want to take note of....but, don't all of us have these wishes to go back in time, too!

Peter, I've read that there was a wreck on the Hudson Division on October 10 1958. I know the 'Pacemaker' (#1) had an encounter with a rockslide around this timeframe sending its power into the Hudson, killing the engineer. This resulted in the 'Century' (#25) leaving North White Plains behind GP9 5941, 5942. The 'Wolverine' (#17), left behind E8a 4077, E7b 4111, E8a 4054. The power for the 'Wolverine' was sent to North White Plains ahead of the power for the 'Century', so the 'Century' departed with GP's instead of E's.
