Hi Guys,

The new Lionel catalog has the T-1 Reading #2100 featured.  (as you know)  I like this engine but I will have to run it via DCS.  What additional equipment, cables and etc. would I need to purchase if I opt for this engine.  I am a into a DCS experience somewhat but not far enough to go into legacy without help.  The Lionel T-1 comes with a heavy price tag and I need an soft estimate as to about my additional costs will be to run this engine.  I realize this only a upfront cost since I'll be using legacy hardware  for any additional purchases of Lionel engines.

Thanks for your input and my best regards

Tommy

To operate any Legacy or TMCC engine using a DCS Remote, you need the following from page of The DCS Companion 3rd Edition:

Additional Devices Required

Since the DCS TIU does not contain the hardware components to communicate directly with a TMCC or Legacy engine, it's necessary that a Lionel TMCC Command Base or a Legacy Command Base be added to the layout regardless of which method of controlling TMCC or Legacy engines is selected.

If either the Cab-1 or Cab-2 control method is selected, a Lionel Cab-1 or Cab-2 remote control is required in addition to the TMCC or Legacy Command Base. If the DCS Remote control method is selected, an MTH cable is required to connect the TIU and the Lionel Command Base together. Depending upon whether a TMCC or a Legacy Command Base is being connected, the appropriate cable is required. To be useable, a Cab-1 remote control requires the inclusion of a TMCC Command Base while a Cab-2 remote control requires the inclusion of a Legacy Command Base.

At the present time, there are three MTH cables that may be used to connect to one or the other of the Lionel command bases. The three cables are:

• #50-1018, TIU/TMCC 6' Connector Cable may be used only to connect the TIU to a Lionel TMCC Command Base

• #50-1007, TIU/TMCC 6' Connector Cable may be used only to connect the TIU to a Lionel Legacy Command Base

• #50-1032 TIU/TMCC-Legacy 6' Connector Cable may be used to connect the TIU to either a Lionel TMCC Command Base or a Lionel Legacy Command Base

You can add a Base 1L to the above discussion.

This and a whole lot more is all in The DCS Companion 3rd Edition", available for purchase  from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book.

Barry pretty much has you covered on what you need to connect the TMCC/Legacy base to the DCS system to let you run the engine from your DCS remote.  It is worth noting that this will limit you to only the functions the engine offers  when run on an original TMCC command base/cab1 system and you will not have access to any of the additional features offered by the Legacy system, even if you have a Legacy base connected.

To reach any of these additional features you will need the Legacy base and remote.  A couple of the features can be accessed with the cab1L/base1L, notably the quelling whistle, but for the full Legacy experience you need the full 990 set.
